Studio Setup Planner is a simple top-down floor plan for photographers and content creators. Enter your room's width and length in feet, then add to-scale blocks for a desk, chair, light, camera and mic stand. Drag them into place, right-click to turn them, and test a layout before you move any real gear.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Studio Setup Planner?

It is a free, browser-based floor plan for a small studio. You set the room's width and length in feet, and the planner draws it to scale. You can then add blocks for a desk (5 by 2.5 feet), a chair (2 by 2 feet), a light and a camera (each 1.5 by 1.5 feet) and a mic stand (1 by 1 foot), and drag them around to see what fits. It suits photographers and creators planning a home studio, a desk setup or a recording corner.

How do I add lights and other equipment to my diagram?

Use the buttons above the floor plan: Desk, Chair, Light, Camera and Mic Stand. Each click adds one block of that item, sized to scale and placed in the top-left corner of the room. You can add as many of each as you need, for example several lights. Drag a block with the mouse to move it, right-click it to rotate it a quarter turn, and double-click it to remove it. Clear Studio Plan removes everything.

Why should I use the Studio Setup Planner instead of just sketching on paper?

Everything in the planner is to scale, so you can see straight away whether a desk, a light and a camera position really fit in your room with space to move around them. Rearranging is a drag rather than an eraser and a redraw, and changing the room size rescales the whole plan. For quick what-if checks it is faster than paper. It does not save or print plans, so take a screenshot of a layout you want to keep.

When is the best time to utilize this planning tool?

Use it before you buy or move furniture and gear: when setting up a new studio or home office, rearranging a room for a different kind of shoot, or checking whether a space you are thinking of renting is big enough. A few minutes of testing layouts can show that a desk needs to turn or that a light stand would block a walkway, before you carry anything. It is also handy for agreeing a layout with someone helping you set up.

What should I do if my studio dimensions are not displaying correctly?

Enter the width and length in feet, not meters, then click Update Dimensions; the plan does not change until you do. The room is drawn to fit the page, and very long rooms are limited to a fixed height and narrowed to keep their proportions, so the plan may look smaller than expected while staying to scale. If you resize the browser window, the plan redraws automatically. Items that no longer fit are moved back inside the walls.

How does this differ from 3D rendering software?

3D lighting software models how light falls on surfaces and how a shot will look. This planner does nothing of the kind. It is a flat, top-down layout with rectangles for furniture and equipment, measured in feet, and it answers one practical question: does this arrangement fit in this room? That makes it quick to learn and use in any browser. For lighting ratios, modifiers and shadows you still need test shots or dedicated lighting software.

How can I share my completed studio setup with my lighting assistant?

The planner has no export or share button, so the simplest way is to take a screenshot of the finished floor plan and send it, or paste it into your call sheet. Each block is labeled with its name, and the room is drawn to the proportions you entered, so the screenshot shows clearly where everything goes. Include the room dimensions in your message, because they are not printed on the plan itself.

Can I save multiple layouts within the Studio Setup Planner for different clients?

No. The planner does not save layouts, and reloading the page starts a fresh, empty plan. To keep a layout, take a screenshot of it and store it with the client's job notes, together with the room dimensions you used. Rebuilding a layout later only takes a minute: enter the dimensions, add the items and drag them into the positions shown in your screenshot.

Why do my items move when I change the room size?

Every item is kept inside the walls. When you make the room smaller and click Update Dimensions, any item that would now sit partly outside is pushed back in until it touches the nearest wall. The same rule applies while dragging, so you cannot place an item outside the room. Rotating an item near a wall can nudge it inward too, because its width and depth swap. Items are not snapped to a grid; they stay where you drop them.

Does the tool account for ambient light sources like studio windows?

No. The planner has no windows, doors or walls to place, and it does not simulate daylight or any other light. It only lays out the five item types on a plain rectangular floor plan. If a window matters to your setup, note which wall it is on and plan around it, for example by placing the desk or a light accordingly, then mark it on your screenshot afterwards so anyone helping you knows where the daylight comes from.
