Frequently asked questions
What is the Resize for Instagram Story 9:16 tool?
It is a free browser tool that turns photos into 1080 by 1920 pixel JPGs, the 9:16 vertical shape Instagram Stories use, nine units wide for every sixteen tall. Each photo is either center-cropped to fill the screen or fitted inside the frame with white borders, depending on the mode you pick. That saves you working out the proportions in editing software and keeps your Stories sharp and correctly framed.
How do I use the Resize for Instagram Story 9:16 tool for my photography?
Use the file picker in the upload area to choose one or more photos. Under Fitting Mode, select Center Crop (Fill) for a full-screen Story, or Fit (Borders) to avoid cutting off edges. Adjust the Output Quality slider, which starts at 92 percent, then click Convert for Story. Each photo downloads as a 1080 by 1920 JPG named Story_9_16_ plus your file name. Clear All empties the list for the next set.
Why should photographers use a dedicated 9:16 resizing tool instead of cropping on their phones?
Preparing the files on your computer means each image arrives on your phone at exactly 1080 by 1920 pixels, so Instagram does not have to crop or scale it on the way in. You can also process a whole batch with the same settings rather than framing each one by hand in the app, which speeds up planning a series of Stories from a shoot or a client gallery teaser.
What should I do if my landscape photo looks awkwardly cropped after resizing?
Turning a horizontal photo into a vertical frame means Center Crop keeps only the middle and removes much of each side. If that loses the subject, crop the photo to 9:16 in your editor first, around a strong vertical element such as a person, a tree or a doorway, and then resize it here. If the image only works in full, use Fit (Borders) instead, which keeps the whole frame and adds white space above and below.
How does this differ from standard image resizing software?
General resizing software usually asks you to enter pixel dimensions and work out the crop yourself. This tool does one job: it outputs 1080 by 1920 pixels every time, with a center crop or white borders, so there is nothing to calculate. Your original file is never changed; you get a new JPG at the quality you set. For a crop that is not centered, frame the image in your editor first.
When is the best time in my editing workflow to use the Resize for Instagram Story 9:16 tool?
Use it at the very end of your post-production workflow. Complete color correction, exposure, retouching and sharpening on your master files in your editing software first. Once the finished images are exported at full resolution, run them through this tool to create Story versions. Your posts then carry the exact color grade of your finished work, while your full-resolution masters stay untouched for clients and print.
Does resizing my image change the original file resolution?
Your original file is not changed at all; the tool saves a new copy. That copy is always exactly 1080 by 1920 pixels, the size Instagram recommends for Stories. Large photos are scaled down to that size, and photos smaller than the frame are scaled up, which can look soft, so start from a full-resolution export. Center Crop also discards the parts of the image outside the 9:16 frame.
Which image file formats are supported by the resizing tool?
You can add JPG and PNG files, and other formats your browser can open, such as WebP. Every result is saved as a JPG, which keeps files small and sharp for social media, at the quality you set on the slider. JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas in a PNG become white. Camera RAW files are not supported and must be exported as JPG or PNG before you resize them.
Is there a file size limit when uploading to the tool?
There is no fixed limit. Because your photos are resized in your browser on your own device rather than sent anywhere, the practical limit is your device's memory, and normal exports from professional cameras work fine. Very large files, or long batches on an older phone, may take a little longer. Each result is a 1080 by 1920 JPG, so the downloaded files are small whatever size your originals are.
Will images processed here work on other platforms besides Instagram?
Yes. The 9:16 shape at 1080 by 1920 pixels is the common standard for full-screen vertical content on phones, so the files work for Facebook Stories, TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Snapchat as well as Instagram. The tool is named for Instagram, but the output is a plain vertical JPG that suits any platform or display that expects a full-screen portrait image.
