8:5 Crop
The 8:5 Crop gives photographers a quick way to fit images to the 16:10 shape used by many laptop screens, tablets and presentation layouts. Choose a photo and the tool cuts the largest centered 8:5 landscape frame it can find, then saves a lossless PNG at the original pixel resolution, ready for wallpapers, slides and web headers.

Frequently asked questions
What is an 8:5 aspect ratio?
8:5 means the width is 1.6 times the height. It is the same shape as 16:10, a common format for laptop and tablet displays, and it sits between the 3:2 of most camera sensors and the wider 16:9 of video. A 6000 x 4000 pixel photo cropped to 8:5 becomes 6000 x 3750 pixels, losing only thin strips at the top and bottom.
How do I use the 8:5 Crop?
Click the upload area and choose an image. The Crop Preview section appears, listing your file with 8:5 Ready next to its name. Click Crop & Download and the tool cuts the centered 8:5 frame and saves it straight away as cropped_8_5.png. To crop another image, choose a new file and click the button again.
Can I move the crop or make a vertical 5:8 image?
No. The crop is always centered, and the result is always landscape, 8 wide by 5 tall. If your subject sits near the edge of the frame, adjust the composition in your editor first. For a vertical 5:8 image, rotate the photo to landscape, crop it here, and then rotate the downloaded file back to portrait orientation.
What file format is the result?
The cropped image is saved as a PNG, a lossless format, so no compression artifacts are added during the crop. PNG files made from large camera images are noticeably bigger than JPGs, so convert the result if you need a lighter file for the web. You can load JPG, PNG, WebP or any other image format your browser can display.
Where would a photographer use 8:5 images?
Desktop wallpapers for 16:10 displays, full-screen slideshows on laptops and tablets, presentation slides and website hero images all suit this ratio. Cropping before you deliver or publish keeps control of the composition in your hands, rather than letting a screen, template or slideshow app trim the image automatically and cut off something important.
Is the 8:5 Crop free?
Yes. It costs nothing, adds no watermark and needs no download. Your photo is processed in your browser on your own device and is never uploaded. To use it, you confirm once that you're a photographer and create or log into a free Imagen account, and then all of the tools on the site are available to you.
