7:5 Photo Crop

Printing 5x7 photos or designing for a 7:5 layout starts with the right shape. The 7:5 Photo Crop trims your image to an exact 7:5 landscape ratio, centering the crop and keeping as many original pixels as possible, so photographers can prepare prints, cards and albums without fiddling with crop handles.

Frequently asked questions

What does the 7:5 Photo Crop do?

It cuts your photo to a frame 7 units wide by 5 units tall, the same proportions as a 7 x 5 inch print. The crop is centered and as large as possible: standard 3:2 camera files keep their full height and lose equal strips from the left and right, while squarer 4:3 images keep their full width and are trimmed at the top and bottom. Kept pixels are not resized.

How do I crop a photo to 7:5?

Click the upload area and choose your image. It appears in the list with Aspect Ratio: 7:5 and a Ready status. Click Process & Download and the tool crops the photo and saves the result automatically, named with 7_5_Crop_ in front of your original file name. The status changes to Done when the download starts.

Does it crop vertical photos to 5:7?

No. The output is always landscape, 7 wide by 5 tall. If you load a portrait-orientation photo, the tool keeps its full width and cuts a horizontal 7:5 band from the middle, which removes a lot of the image. For a vertical 5 x 7 print, rotate the photo to landscape first, crop it here, then rotate the downloaded result back.

What format and quality is the cropped file?

It is saved as a JPG at 90 percent quality, which keeps fine detail for prints while producing a reasonably small file. You can load any image your browser can open, such as JPG, PNG or WebP. Because the crop does not resize your photo, the final resolution depends on your original file; a 6000 x 4000 pixel image becomes 5600 x 4000 pixels.

How many pixels do I need for a 5x7 print?

For a 7 x 5 inch print at 300 pixels per inch you need at least 2100 x 1500 pixels, which almost any modern camera file exceeds comfortably after cropping. Higher resolutions simply give the lab more detail to work with. Cropping to the exact ratio before you order means the lab will not trim your image unexpectedly to fit the paper.

Is the 7:5 Photo Crop free and private?

Yes on both counts. There is no cost, no watermark and nothing to install, and your photo is processed in your browser on your own device without being uploaded. You will be asked once to confirm you're a photographer and to create or log into a free Imagen account, which unlocks all of the tools on the site.
