Frequently asked questions

What is an IIQ file?

IIQ, short for Intelligent Image Quality, is the raw format written by Phase One medium format digital backs and cameras. It stores high-resolution sensor data for maximum editing latitude, which is why it is a favorite for commercial, fashion, and landscape work. Few viewers, phones, or web platforms can display it, so a PNG copy makes images easy to share.

How do I convert IIQ files to PNG?

Click the Drop Phase One IIQ Files Here area and select your files; choosing again replaces the list. Each file is listed with a Ready status. Click Convert IIQ to PNG and the files are processed one after another, changing to Processing and then Converted. Each PNG downloads automatically with its original file name and a .png extension. If a file fails, its status shows the reason.

Is this the same as processing IIQ files in a RAW editor?

No. Browsers cannot develop raw sensor data, so the tool offers no raw settings such as white balance, exposure, or film curves. It reads each IIQ file, finds the JPEG previews stored in it, and saves the largest one as a PNG at that preview's resolution, with the camera back's own rendering. It also does not read the raw file's rotation flag, so a vertical shot may need rotating. Use your raw editor for final color and tone.

Can I convert a full set of IIQ captures at once?

Yes. Select as many IIQ files as you need; the converter handles them in sequence and updates the status of each file in the list. Each PNG downloads as its own file. Medium format files are large and are read into your browser's memory, so converting many at once can take a while, and your browser may ask for permission to download multiple files.

Why choose PNG for medium format previews?

PNG is lossless, so saving the preview as PNG adds no further compression on top of the camera's own JPEG, which helps if the image will be edited or placed in a layout and saved again. The trade-off is file size, which can be several times that of the JPEG preview. For quick client previews a JPG is lighter; for print masters, export 16-bit TIFFs from your raw editor and keep the IIQ originals.

Is the IIQ to PNG converter free and private?

Yes. It is free, adds no watermark, and needs no installation. Your IIQ files are processed on your own device inside the browser and never leave it, which suits confidential commercial work. To open the tools, you confirm you are a photographer and create or log into a free account once, and every tool is then unlocked.
