Fuji RAF to TIFF

Fuji RAF to TIFF extracts the largest JPEG preview your Fujifilm camera embedded in each RAF file and saves it as an uncompressed TIFF. Photographers use it to get raw shots into layout, print or retouching software that will not open RAF files. The TIFF holds the camera's own 8-bit rendering of the shot, not a fresh raw development.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Fuji RAF to TIFF converter?

The Fuji RAF to TIFF converter is a free browser tool for Fujifilm shooters. Every RAF file contains raw sensor data plus a JPEG preview the camera rendered at capture. Browsers cannot develop raw data, so the tool finds the largest valid preview, turns it upright, and writes it out as an uncompressed 8-bit TIFF. The result looks like the camera's own JPEG, including your film simulation, in a format that page layout, print and retouching software accepts.

How do I use the Fuji RAF to TIFF tool to process my images?

Drag your RAF files onto the upload area or click it to choose them. They appear in a list with their sizes. Click Convert to TIFF and each file moves through Parsing, Processing and Encoding before it reads Done and downloads as a .tiff file with the original name. If a message says the TIFF encoder is still loading, wait a moment and click again. Everything happens on your own computer, so there is nothing to install and your files are not sent anywhere.

Why should I convert my Fuji RAF files to TIFF instead of JPEG?

Saving as TIFF stops the image losing any more quality. The source is the camera's JPEG preview, so the TIFF cannot add color depth or dynamic range the preview does not have, but it will not add a second round of compression either. Every later edit and save in TIFF stays lossless, which matters if you retouch heavily or hand the file to a print lab or designer. For simple sharing, a JPEG would be far smaller and look the same.

When is the best time in my photography workflow to use the Fuji RAF to TIFF converter?

Use it when you need a raw shot in a program or service that does not read RAF files: a layout app, a print lab upload, a client who wants TIFFs for review, or a quick retouch in an editor without raw support. Since the TIFF is the camera's 8-bit preview, do your exposure and color work on the RAF in a raw editor when quality matters most, and use this converter for fast, faithful copies of how the camera rendered each shot.

How does a TIFF file compare to a DNG file for Fujifilm shooters?

Both preserve quality, but they hold different things. DNG is an open raw format that keeps the sensor data, so it can be developed and re-developed non-destructively in raw software. TIFF is a finished raster image: once written, its colors and tones are fixed. The TIFF this tool makes contains the camera's rendered preview, not the sensor data, so it is a convenient delivery or print file rather than a raw archive. For archiving, keep the RAF itself or convert it to DNG in your raw software.

What should I do if my converted TIFF files are significantly larger than the original RAF files?

That is expected. The tool writes TIFFs without compression, storing every pixel as red, green, blue and alpha values at 8 bits each, which is four bytes per pixel. The file size is therefore roughly the image width times its height times four. The preview inside a RAF is a compact JPEG, so the uncompressed TIFF can easily outweigh it. If storage matters, convert only the images you need, or open the TIFF in your editor and re-save it with compression.

Does the conversion process retain the Fujifilm film simulation profiles applied in-camera?

Yes. Because the TIFF comes from the JPEG preview the camera rendered at capture, it carries the film simulation, white balance, dynamic range setting and other in-camera choices you shot with. That is one advantage of reading the preview: the colors match what you saw on the camera's screen. The flip side is that you cannot change the film simulation afterward from the TIFF. For a different look, reprocess the RAF in camera or in raw software that supports Fujifilm's simulations.

Can I batch process multiple RAF files at once using this tool?

Yes. Select or drop several RAF files at once and click Convert to TIFF. They are processed one at a time on your computer, and each TIFF downloads on its own as soon as it is finished; there is no ZIP archive. Your browser may ask you once to allow multiple downloads. Uncompressed TIFFs are large, so make sure you have disk space for the whole batch, and on an older computer convert a few files at a time to keep memory use down.

Why might my computer struggle to open or edit the newly converted TIFF files?

Uncompressed TIFFs need more memory and disk speed than compressed files, so an older machine can feel slow with many of them open at once. The TIFFs here also include an alpha channel; most editors handle that without trouble, but some simple viewers do not. If a file will not open, try a different program, or open it in your editor and re-save it as a standard RGB TIFF with compression. Closing other applications and working from a fast drive also help with large batches.

Are my proprietary raw files kept private during conversion?

Yes. The converter runs entirely in your browser. Your RAF files are read on your own computer, the preview is extracted and encoded as a TIFF there, and the result is saved straight to your device. Nothing leaves it, so client work under confidentiality agreements and unreleased images stay with you. The tool is free and adds no watermark, so the TIFFs are ready to use as they are.
