Frequently asked questions

What does the Model Release Generator create?

It builds a short, plain-language model release from three details you provide: the model's name, the model's address, and a description of the project or shoot. The document is dated automatically with today's date, grants permission to use the model's likeness for any legal purpose, including advertising and commercial display, and ends with a signature line under the model's name. You can preview it and download it as a text file.

How do I generate a model release step by step?

Under 1. Model Information, enter the Model Name and Model Address. Under 2. Project Details, describe the shoot in the Project/Shoot Description field. Click Generate Release Document and the text appears under Generated Release Preview. Read it through, then click Download as Text File to save it as Model_Release.txt, ready to print or paste into your own contract template.

What if I leave some fields empty?

Any field you leave blank is filled with a placeholder in square brackets, such as [MODEL NAME], [MODEL ADDRESS], or [PROJECT DESCRIPTION]. That makes it easy to produce a blank template you can print and complete by hand on location, or to generate a release now and add the address later. The date is always filled in with the day you generate the document.

Is the generated model release legally binding?

The generator produces a simple, general template, not legal advice. Release requirements differ by country, by state, and by use, and minors need a parent or guardian to sign. Many photographers add their own name, any compensation, and specific usage terms. For commercial or stock work, have the wording reviewed by a lawyer or check it against your agency's own release requirements before relying on it.

When should photographers get a model release signed?

Get the release signed before or at the start of the shoot, while everyone is together, rather than chasing a signature afterwards. Releases matter most when images will be used commercially, in advertising, on stock sites, or in your own marketing. Keep the signed copy with the session's files, so you can show permission quickly if a client or agency asks for it later.

Is the Model Release Generator free and private?

Yes. It is free and works entirely in your browser, so the names and addresses you type stay on your own device and are not sent anywhere. To unlock the tools, you confirm that you are a photographer and create or log into a free account once, and every tool is available after that.
