Average Photo Color

Average Photo Color calculates the mean color of an image by averaging the red, green and blue values of its pixels, then shows the result as a swatch with HEX and RGB codes. Photographers and designers use it to choose backgrounds, borders and mat colors that suit a photo, or to compare the overall tone of images in a series.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Average Photo Color tool?

It is a free tool that calculates the arithmetic mean color of an image. It adds up the red, green and blue values of the pixels and divides each total by the number of pixels, giving one blended color, much like mixing all the paint in a picture together. The result appears as a solid swatch with its HEX code and RGB values, which you can type or paste into design and editing software. Mostly transparent pixels are left out of the calculation.

How do I use the Average Photo Color tool to find the exact hex code of my image?

Click the file area and choose an image. A preview of the photo appears, and the Find Average Color button becomes active. Click it, and within a moment a color swatch appears below, with the HEX code, such as #8A7B6C, and the RGB value, such as rgb(138, 123, 108). Select the text to copy it into your editing software, website builder or design app. To analyze another image, choose a new file and click the button again.

Why would a photographer need to find the average color of a photo?

Photographers often need to determine the average color of an image to maintain brand consistency and improve aesthetic presentation. Knowing the overall blended hue helps in creating harmonious grid layouts, designing portfolio websites, or selecting the perfect matting and frame colors for physical prints. Additionally, when compiling a photo book or a client gallery, placing images with complementary average colors next to each other creates a more pleasing viewing experience. It is also useful for composite photography, where matching the ambient color tone of a background to a new subject is critical for realism.

When should I use the Average Photo Color tool instead of an eyedropper tool in my editor?

Use this tool when you need the average of the entire image rather than the color of one spot. An eyedropper samples a single pixel or a small area, so its reading can be skewed by noise, grain or a local highlight. If you want the overall mood or color cast of a scene, for example to compare the warmth of several frames from one session, an average across the whole photo gives a more objective baseline than clicking around in search of a representative pixel.

Why does the calculated average color look muddy or gray compared to my vibrant photo?

If your photograph contains strongly contrasting colors, such as vivid blues alongside bright oranges, or deep blacks mixed with pure whites, the average of those opposing values often lands on a desaturated, muddy or grayish tone. Complementary colors cancel each other out when blended. To get a color that represents a specific subject, crop the image to that area of interest before loading it into the tool. That stops contrasting background elements from neutralizing the result.

How does an average color differ from a dominant color palette?

An average color is a single hue derived by mathematically blending every single pixel in an image together, much like mixing all the paint on a canvas into one single bucket. A dominant color palette, on the other hand, identifies the most frequently occurring distinct colors within the image and presents them as separate swatches. While the average color gives you the overall tonal center of the photograph, a dominant palette preserves the distinct contrast and individual hues present in the scene. Both metrics are valuable, but they serve entirely different design and color grading purposes.

Are my photographs stored anywhere after processing?

No. The color analysis runs entirely in your web browser, so the image is read and averaged on your own device, the color values are displayed on your screen, and your photo never leaves the device. Nothing is kept once you close the page. Photographers handle sensitive and copyrighted material, and this keeps your work entirely yours, so you can analyze client galleries, unreleased editorial work or personal projects without a second thought.

What file formats are supported by the color extraction tool?

The tool reads JPEG, PNG and WebP, along with any other image format your browser can display. Transparent areas in PNG and WebP files are ignored, so a cutout's background does not pull the average toward black or white. RAW files from your camera, such as CR2, NEF or ARW, cannot be opened directly. To analyze one, export a JPEG or PNG version from your RAW development software first, then load that file.

Is there a file size limit for images?

There is no fixed limit, because the image is processed on your own device. Before averaging, the tool scales a copy of your photo so its longest side is at most 500 pixels, which keeps the calculation fast without changing the result in any meaningful way, since averaging is unaffected by resolution. A web-sized export and a full-resolution camera file of the same picture give practically the same color. Very large files may take a moment longer to open in the browser.

Can I use the extracted color codes directly in my photo editing workflow?

Yes. HEX and RGB are standard color formats, so you can enter the values in the color picker of any photo editor, layout program or website builder: for solid fill layers, borders, backgrounds or color grading targets. This helps when you want to match a studio backdrop or album page to a photo, or set a slide or gallery background that harmonizes with a series. Keep in mind the codes describe sRGB color, the standard for screens and the web.
