Frequently asked questions
How does AI Photo Color Match work?
The tool averages every pixel in the reference photo to find its overall red, green and blue levels. It then scales each channel of your base photo by how far that average sits from a neutral mid-grey. A warm, golden reference pushes the base toward warm tones, and a cool, blue reference pushes it cooler. The structure and detail of the base photo are not changed.
How do I match colors between two photos?
Click the upload area and select both photos in the same file dialog. The list labels one Target, the photo that will change, and the other Reference, the color source. If they are the wrong way round, select them again in a different order. Click Match Colors & Download and the adjusted base photo downloads as color-matched.png. Only the first two files you select are used.
Will it change the brightness of my photo?
It can. Because the tool compares the reference's average color with mid-grey, a dark reference darkens the base and a bright reference lightens it, along with shifting the color. Channels are capped at full brightness, so a very light reference may clip highlights. For the most predictable results, pick a reference with a similar overall brightness to the base photo.
When is color matching useful for photographers?
It helps when one frame in a set has a different color cast from the rest, for example a shot taken under mixed light at a wedding reception, or images from a second camera body that renders slightly warmer. Use a well-edited frame from the same set as the reference. The adjustment covers the whole image, so it suits overall casts rather than local color problems.
What file types can I use, and what do I get?
Both photos can be any image format your browser can open, such as JPG, PNG or WebP, and they do not need to be the same size. The result is the base photo at its original pixel dimensions, saved as a lossless PNG named color-matched.png, so no extra compression is added. Convert it to JPG afterward if you need a smaller file.
Is the tool free and private?
Yes. AI Photo Color Match is free, adds no watermark and runs in your browser, so both photos are processed on your own device and never uploaded. The first time you use it, you confirm you're a photographer and create or sign into a free Imagen account, and every tool on the site stays unlocked from then on.
