AI Photo to Pencil Sketch
AI Photo to Pencil Sketch converts a photo into a black and white pencil drawing using the classic dodge-and-blur technique rather than machine learning. Flat areas turn to white paper while edges and texture stay as graphite lines. Photographers set the stroke strength from 1 to 10 and download a full-resolution JPEG in seconds.

Frequently asked questions
How does the pencil sketch effect work, and is it AI?
It uses a classic technique, not machine learning. The tool converts the photo to greyscale, makes a blurred copy, and blends the two with a color dodge, which divides the photo by its blurred version. Wherever the photo matches its blur, in flat areas such as sky, walls or smooth skin, the result goes white like blank paper. Wherever detail differs from the blur, along edges and texture, darker lines remain, which reads as graphite strokes.
How do I turn a photo into a pencil sketch?
Click the file area and choose an image. The Sketch Intensity slider appears, set to 5, and the Generate Sketch button becomes active. Move the slider anywhere from 1 to 10, then click Generate Sketch. The tool processes the photo in your browser and downloads the result as pencil-sketch.jpg. To try another strength, move the slider and click again, renaming each download so the next one does not overwrite it.
What does the Sketch Intensity slider change?
It sets how wide the blur is, which controls how bold the strokes look. At 1, the sketch shows fine, light lines and mostly white paper, like a delicate outline drawing. Higher values give broader, darker strokes and more shading inside shapes, like a soft pencil pressed harder. The blur scales with the size of your photo, so a setting looks about the same on a small web image and on a full camera file.
Which photos make the best sketches?
Photos with clear edges and good contrast work best: portraits lit from the side, architecture, street scenes, animals with defined fur, and close-ups of hands or textures. Flat, low-contrast images can come out faint, because there is little difference between the photo and its blur. Very noisy high-ISO shots can turn speckled. If a sketch looks too pale, raise the intensity, or add some contrast to the photo before converting it.
What format is the sketch saved in?
The sketch is saved as a JPEG at 92 percent quality, at the same pixel dimensions as your photo, so it holds up for prints. It contains only shades of grey, from white paper to dark graphite. Transparent areas in a PNG are treated as white paper. You can open JPG, PNG and other formats your browser can display; if a file cannot be opened, the tool tells you and you can try a JPG or PNG instead.
Is the pencil sketch tool free and private?
Yes. It is free, adds no watermark and needs no installation. The sketch is made in your browser on your own device, so your photo never leaves it, which makes the tool suitable for client portraits and personal photos. The first time, you answer that you're a photographer and create or log into a free Imagen account, which unlocks this tool and every other one on the site.
