AI Photo to Cartoon
AI Photo to Cartoon turns a photo into a flat-color cartoon with inked outlines, using a classic image filter rather than machine learning. It smooths texture while keeping edges, reduces the colors to a few bands and draws dark lines along strong edges. Photographers set the strength with one slider and save a full-resolution PNG.

Frequently asked questions
How does the cartoon effect work, and is it AI?
It is a classic image filter, not machine learning, built in three steps. First, three passes of edge-preserving smoothing flatten skin, fabric and other texture while keeping the boundaries between different colors sharp. Second, every color channel is reduced to a small number of flat bands, which gives the cel-shaded look. Third, the tool finds strong edges in the original photo and draws dark outlines along them, like ink lines in a comic or animation.
How do I turn a photo into a cartoon?
Click the file area or drag a photo onto it. The Cartoon Intensity slider appears, set to 50 percent, and your file is listed as Pending. Move the slider anywhere from 10 to 100 percent, then click Generate Cartoon. The status changes to Processing and then Finished, and the result downloads as cartoon-version.png. To compare strengths, move the slider and click Generate Cartoon again, renaming each file so the next one does not overwrite it.
What does the Cartoon Intensity slider change?
Everything at once. At the low end, smoothing is light, each color channel keeps 11 bands and only the strongest edges get outlines, so the result looks like a softly illustrated photo. As you raise it, smoothing gets heavier, the bands drop toward 4 per channel at 100 percent, and more edges are inked, including finer ones. Around 40 to 60 percent suits most portraits; higher settings give a bold, poster-like style.
Which photos make the best cartoons?
Photos with a clear subject, good contrast and an uncluttered background give the cleanest result: portraits, pets, couples, cars and simple street scenes. Busy textures such as foliage, gravel or patterned clothing create lots of small outlines that can look cluttered, especially at high intensity. Noisy low-light images can also gain stray lines. If a photo comes out too busy, lower the intensity or crop tighter on the subject before converting it.
What format and size is the cartoon saved in?
The cartoon is saved as a PNG at the same pixel dimensions as your photo, so it stays sharp for prints and large screens. The outlines are traced on a copy about 1000 pixels across and scaled up, so the line weight looks consistent whether your photo is small or a full camera file. You can open JPG, PNG and other formats your browser can display. Large photos can take several seconds to process.
Is the cartoon tool free and private?
Yes. It is free, adds no watermark and needs no software. The filter runs in your browser on your own device, so your photo never leaves it, which makes the tool fine for client portraits and family pictures. The first time, you answer that you're a photographer and create or log into a free Imagen account, and that unlocks this tool and every other one on the site.
