7 Best Aftershoot Alternatives for Photographers in 2026
Table of contents
Photographers look for an Aftershoot alternative for a few common reasons. Some want an editor that learns their own style more closely, some want culling and editing priced differently, and some wonder whether Lightroom’s own AI is now enough. Here are seven tools worth knowing about, including Aftershoot itself, with what each one does today. Facts and prices are from each company’s own pages, checked in October 2026.
1. Imagen
Imagen is an AI photo editor that learns your editing style. You train a Personal AI Profile on your own edited photos, and Imagen applies your style to every photo in a new shoot, so a full wedding comes back looking like you edited it. It also culls: AI culling groups duplicates and flags blurry shots and closed eyes, and you make the final calls.
Imagen is a desktop app for Mac and Windows, and it works alongside Lightroom Classic: your AI edits go back into your catalog, so you finish the gallery in the tool you already know. The newest part is Imagen Studio, where you cull, edit, review and export in one project. Its assistant lets you adjust edits in plain words across the set, like “make the 25mm photos black and white”. It moves the sliders you’d move by hand and keeps your original pixels: it never adds or removes a pixel. Studio is rolling out gradually.
Pricing is either Pay-as-you-go, billed per edited photo, or Limitless, a fixed monthly or annual fee for unlimited AI edits with AI culling included. See Imagen’s plans for the rates in your currency. You can try it with 1,000 free photos, no credit card required. For a closer side-by-side, read Aftershoot vs Imagen.
2. Aftershoot
Aftershoot is a desktop app for Windows and macOS that covers culling, AI editing and AI retouching, and since 2026, client galleries. It works offline, on your own computer.
- Culling groups duplicates and lets you cull automatically or with assistance.
- Editing learns from your past edits, can turn a Lightroom preset into an AI profile, or uses one of 30+ ready-made styles. It can apply your profile to a Lightroom Classic catalog, and culls go back to Lightroom through XMP.
- Retouching covers skin, stray hairs, glasses glare and backgrounds.
In May 2026, Aftershoot replaced its Pro and Max plans with separate ones: culling from $10 a month, editing $30, retouching $20, or all three for $45, billed annually, with unlimited photos and a 30-day free trial. It suits wedding and portrait photographers who want culling, editing and retouching from one company.
3. Adobe Lightroom
Adobe Lightroom is still the photo catalog and editor most photographers finish in, and it now has its own AI culling (see below). It comes in two desktop apps, Lightroom Classic and Lightroom (the cloud-based one), both included in Adobe’s plans: the Lightroom plan is $11.99 a month with 1TB, and the Photography plan, which adds Photoshop, is $19.99 a month, both billed annually. It suits photographers who want full manual control and are happy to manage a catalog.
4. Luminar Neo
Luminar Neo, now mostly sold as Luminar, is a desktop editor from Skylum for macOS and Windows, with a mobile app too. It’s built around AI-assisted creative edits: Enhance, sky and atmosphere tools, portrait retouching, generative erase and expand, and an AI Assistant that takes written edit requests. It works as a standalone app or as a plugin inside Lightroom Classic and Photoshop, though the generative tools and the AI Assistant aren’t available in plugin mode. It has no culling. Skylum sells perpetual licences with optional yearly upgrades, and prices change often with promotions.
5. Narrative
Narrative, which used to be called Narrative Select, started as a fast culling app and now edits as well. You cull in Narrative, then “ship” your selects to Lightroom Classic, Lightroom, Photoshop or Capture One with an AI preset applied. Training a preset on your own style needs Lightroom Classic, and you finish and export in Lightroom, since Narrative doesn’t export JPEGs. Plans start at $10 a month for culling only, billed annually, up to $60 a month with several trained presets, all with unlimited images.
6. Evoto
Evoto is an AI portrait retouching app for portrait and wedding photographers, with culling, per-face retouching, color matching, background replacement and batch sync. It runs on desktop, in the browser as Evoto Online and on iPad, and it works with Lightroom Classic through Edit In. Pricing is credit-based: AI features cost from 1 credit per photo, while basic adjustments and manual tools are free. It suits photographers whose main job is retouching portraits rather than editing whole galleries.
7. Photo Mechanic
Photo Mechanic, from Camera Bits, is a fast desktop tool for ingesting, browsing, culling and tagging photos with metadata. It’s built for speed, not AI: there’s no AI culling or editing, so photojournalists and event photographers use it to cull before editing elsewhere. It’s sold monthly ($14.99), yearly ($149) or as a perpetual licence ($299), and Photo Mechanic Plus adds catalogs.
Lightroom’s own AI culling and Prompt to Edit
If you’re thinking of leaving Aftershoot, it’s worth knowing what Lightroom now does on its own.
Assisted Culling arrived in Lightroom desktop and in Lightroom Classic 15.0 in October 2025. It picks photos by subject sharpness, eye sharpness and open eyes, and flags misfires and exposure problems. Each call comes with a score and a reason, and you can override any of them, then flag, rate or label the selects in one go. Lightroom Classic added duplicate detection in June 2026. It’s a solid first pass, and it comes with your Adobe plan. What it doesn’t do is learn your taste or edit the selects for you.
Prompt to Edit arrived in Lightroom desktop 9.6 in September 2026, in early access, and isn’t in Lightroom Classic. You describe a change, and generative AI redraws the photo, saving the result as a new AI-generated DNG. Each try uses generative credits: 20 at 2K and 30 at 4K, against 250 a month on the Lightroom plan. It’s useful for restoring an old scan or removing something from one hero shot, but it redraws one photo at a time, and in our test it changed more than we asked for. Read Lightroom Prompt to Edit, explained for the test, and Adobe generative credits, explained for what a whole wedding would cost.
So Lightroom now covers a first cull and a few generative fixes. Editing a whole wedding in your own style is still the job of a tool like Imagen or Aftershoot.

Frequently asked questions
Does Lightroom have AI culling now?
Yes. Assisted Culling arrived in Lightroom desktop and in Lightroom Classic 15.0 in October 2025. It picks photos by subject and eye sharpness and open eyes, flags misfires and exposure problems, and lets you override every call. It leaves the editing to you.
Is Lightroom Prompt to Edit a replacement for Aftershoot?
No. Prompt to Edit, in Lightroom desktop 9.6, redraws one photo at a time from a written request, saves the result as a new AI-generated DNG and uses generative credits on every try. It doesn’t cull, and it doesn’t edit a gallery in your style.
Do these Aftershoot alternatives run in a browser?
Mostly not. Imagen, Aftershoot, Lightroom Classic, Luminar, Narrative and Photo Mechanic are desktop apps. Lightroom also has a web version, and Evoto offers Evoto Online in the browser alongside its desktop app.
Is there a free trial available for Imagen?
Yes. Imagen offers a free trial of 1,000 photos, with no credit card required and no time limit.
