Frequently asked questions
What does the Photo Vintage Filter do?
It applies the standard sepia matrix, which recalculates each pixel's red, green and blue values from a weighted mix of all three to produce warm brown tones. The Vintage Intensity slider then blends that sepia version with your original colors. At 0 percent nothing changes, at 100 percent the image is fully sepia, and values in between keep some of the original color.
How do I apply the vintage filter?
Click the area labeled Upload Photo for Vintage Filter and choose a JPG or PNG, or drag one in. Set Vintage Intensity with the slider, which starts at 70 percent. Click Apply Vintage Filter and your browser saves the result as a JPEG with vintage_ added to the beginning of the file name. Adjust the slider and apply again for a different strength.
What Vintage Intensity should I use?
For a subtle, nostalgic warmth that still shows the original colors, 30 to 50 percent works well on portraits and family photos. The default 70 percent gives a clear vintage look with a hint of color. Use 100 percent for a full sepia print effect, suited to heritage and historical styling. Sepia also brightens slightly, so watch bright highlights.
Does it add grain, scratches or a vignette?
No. The filter changes color only, applying a sepia tone at the strength you choose. It does not add grain, dust, scratches, borders or a vignette. If you want those, combine it with other free tools, such as the film grain tool or the lomo effect's vignette, applying the vintage tone first and texture last.
Which formats are supported, and what is the output quality?
It accepts JPG and PNG, as shown in the upload area, along with most other formats your browser can open. The result is a high-quality JPEG at the original pixel dimensions. Start from a well-edited image with good exposure, since the filter works from the tones it is given and will not recover detail that is already lost.
Do I need to pay, install software or upload my photos to use the Photo Vintage Filter?
No to all three. There is no fee, no watermark and nothing to install, and because the processing runs in your browser, your photos never leave your device. The first time you use any of the tools, you answer that you are a photographer and create or log into a free Imagen account; after that, this tool and the rest are unlocked.
