EXIF Data Remover

The EXIF Data Remover strips hidden metadata such as GPS coordinates, capture dates, camera serial numbers and copyright fields from JPEG, PNG and WebP photos before you share them. Add several images at once and it cuts the metadata out of each file directly, so the pixels and the color profile stay exactly as they were.

Frequently asked questions

What is the EXIF Data Remover and how does it work?

The EXIF Data Remover deletes the hidden information cameras and editing apps store inside image files, such as camera model, lens, exposure settings, capture date and GPS coordinates. Instead of redrawing the picture, it reads the file's structure and cuts out the metadata sections: EXIF, XMP, IPTC and comments in JPEGs, text, EXIF and timestamp chunks in PNGs, and EXIF and XMP in WebP files. Everything else is copied byte for byte, so the photo looks exactly the same. Each cleaned file downloads in its original format with clean_ added to the start of its name.

Why should photographers remove EXIF data before publishing images online?

Photographers remove EXIF data mainly to protect their privacy and keep professional details to themselves. Modern cameras and smartphones often record precise GPS coordinates, which can reveal your home address, studio location or the exact place of a private shoot. Many professionals also prefer to keep their camera settings and gear choices private to protect their shooting techniques. Stripping metadata slightly reduces file size as well, which helps a little with page load times on large portfolio sites. Removing this data ensures you share only the image itself, not the sensitive technical background.

How do I verify that the EXIF Data Remover successfully wiped my metadata?

You can check with the file properties viewer built into your computer's operating system. After the cleaned image downloads, find the file on your drive. On Windows, right-click the image, select Properties and open the Details tab. On a Mac, Control-click the file, select Get Info and expand the More Info section. Before cleaning, these sections show camera, exposure, date and location details. After processing, those fields are blank or missing, confirming that the hidden information has been removed. Compare the cleaned copy with the original side by side if you want to see exactly what was dropped.

What should I do if my processed image still shows copyright information?

That should be rare, because the remover deletes copyright and creator fields along with EXIF. Those details are usually written as IPTC or XMP data, and the tool removes the XMP and IPTC sections of a JPEG, the text chunks of a PNG that hold them, and the XMP chunk of a WebP file. If you still see a credit, check whether it is a visible watermark in the picture itself, or whether your computer is showing details cached from the original. If you want shared copies to keep a copyright notice, set your editing software's export to include copyright only instead.

How does stripping metadata differ from compressing an image?

Stripping metadata and compressing an image serve different purposes, though both can reduce file size. Stripping metadata targets the information stored alongside the picture, such as camera settings, timestamps and GPS coordinates. Removing it has no effect on the visual quality or resolution of the photograph. Compression, on the other hand, changes the pixel data itself to make the file smaller. Lossy compression permanently discards color and detail, which can introduce visible artifacts or reduce sharpness. Removing metadata is a privacy measure, whereas compression is a way to manage storage and bandwidth.

When is the best time in my workflow to use the EXIF Data Remover?

Use it at the very end of your post-production workflow, right before you publish images online or send them to a client. Keep the original metadata during culling and editing, because editing software relies on EXIF data to apply lens corrections, sort images by capture time and organize files by camera body. Once you have finished color grading and retouching and exported your final files, run those exported copies through the remover. Your master files keep their data, while the copies you share stay private.

Does removing EXIF data degrade the color profile or resolution of my photograph?

No. The remover keeps the embedded ICC color profile, along with a JPEG's JFIF and Adobe color sections and the color information in PNG and WebP files, and removes only metadata. Dimensions, sharpness and color stay exactly as they were. There is one exception: a JPEG that relies on an EXIF orientation tag to display upright would turn sideways once that tag is gone, so the tool redraws it upright and saves it at maximum JPEG quality instead. That copy is re-encoded and does not carry the color profile, which matters mainly for wide-gamut files.

Which image file formats are compatible with the EXIF Data Remover?

The remover works with JPEG, PNG and WebP files, the formats used most for web publishing and client delivery, and each cleaned file keeps its original format. JPEGs usually carry the most camera and GPS metadata, while PNG and WebP files can hold EXIF, XMP and text fields too. RAW formats such as CR2, NEF and ARW, as well as DNG, TIFF and HEIC files, are not supported. RAW files need their metadata to be read correctly by editing software, so strip data only from your final exported files.

Why did the EXIF Data Remover fail to process my image file?

Most failures come down to the file itself. The file picker accepts JPEG, PNG and WebP, so RAW, TIFF, HEIC or PDF files cannot be cleaned. A file with a damaged or unusual structure cannot be cut apart safely; the tool then tries to redraw it instead, which only works if your browser can open the image. If some downloads are missing after a batch, check whether your browser blocked multiple downloads from the page and allow them. The tool sets no file size limit, though very large images take longer on slower devices.

Is it safe to use this online tool on my unreleased client photos?

Yes. The remover reads and cleans your photos entirely in your web browser, on your own device. Your images are never uploaded anywhere, so no copy of the original or the cleaned file exists outside your computer, and nothing can be stored, analyzed or claimed by anyone else. That makes it suitable for unreleased client work, private sessions and embargoed images. The tool is free, adds no watermark and needs no software. The first time you use it, you confirm you are a photographer and create or log in to a free Imagen account, which unlocks every tool on the site.
