Compress Image to 5MB

This free compressor helps photographers bring large exports under 5MB, a common ceiling for email attachments, contest entries and print lab uploads. Add one or more high-resolution photos and each is re-encoded as a JPEG, starting at high quality and stepping down only when needed, so most images keep their full detail and original dimensions.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compress an image to under 5MB?

Click the area labeled Click or Drag to Upload and choose one or more photos. Each file appears in the list with its size in MB and a Ready status. Press Compress Images and each status changes to Compressing while the tool encodes a JPEG and checks it against the 5MB limit. When a file shows Done, its compressed copy has downloaded as a .jpg file with compressed_ added to the start of the name. Choosing new files replaces the current list.

Will my photo lose quality when compressed to 5MB?

Usually very little. The tool starts at 90 percent JPEG quality, and most photos, even from high-resolution cameras, fit under 5MB at that first setting. Only when the file is still too large does it lower quality in 10 percent steps. The pixel dimensions never change, so the compressed image is still suitable for large prints, client delivery and full-screen viewing. Every file is re-encoded, even one already under 5MB, so there is no need to run a photo that already fits.

What file types can I compress to 5MB?

You can add any image format your browser can open, such as JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and BMP. Large PNG exports often shrink the most, because they are converted to JPEG. JPEG has no transparency, so any transparent areas are filled with white, which suits photographs rather than logos with cutout backgrounds. RAW files need to be exported from your editor before compressing them here.

What if a very large image stays above 5MB?

Stitched panoramas, gigapixel scans or extremely detailed files can sometimes remain above 5MB even at the lowest quality step, and the tool downloads its smallest version in that case. Resizing the image to fewer pixels before compressing is the reliable fix. Check the requirements of the lab or platform you are sending to, since many state a maximum pixel size as well as a file size.

Why do photographers compress images to 5MB?

Many email services limit attachments, and contest platforms, stock agencies, print labs and client portals often set a per-file ceiling around 5MB. Compressing a copy of your final export lets you send a full-resolution image that still meets the limit. Keep your original export and editing files as the archive version, and use the compressed JPEG only for the delivery that needs it.

Is it free to compress images to 5MB here?

Yes, the tool is completely free, with no watermark and nothing to install. Your photos are processed in your own browser and never uploaded anywhere, which makes it safe for unreleased client work. Before first use you confirm that you are a photographer and create or log in to a free Imagen account, and from then on every tool is unlocked.
