Frequently asked questions
Who is the Imagen API for?
The API is built for developers and technical teams who want to connect Imagen’s AI editing engine directly to their own app, platform, or automated workflow. If you run a real estate photography platform, a studio with a custom backend, or any product where photos need to be edited automatically at scale — the API lets you do that without your team touching the Imagen desktop app.
How does the API workflow work?
The core flow is straightforward: create a project, upload your photos, choose an AI Profile, and trigger the edit. Imagen processes the photos and returns the results — either as XMP files to refine in Lightroom, or as final JPEGs ready for delivery. You can also set a callback URL so your system gets notified automatically when editing is done, instead of checking the status manually.
Which AI Profile does the API use to edit my photos?
You choose. The API supports both Talent AI Profiles and your own Personal AI Profile the same one you’d use in the Imagen desktop app. If you’ve already trained a Personal AI Profile, you can apply it through the API and every photo comes back edited in your style, at whatever volume you need.
Do I get the final JPEGs back, or do I need to open the results in Lightroom?
Both options are available. By default, Imagen returns XMP or DNG files that you open in Lightroom or Photoshop to see the edits applied. If you need final JPEGs for client delivery, a gallery platform, or a real estate portal you can request an export to JPEG as an optional step. Many photographers prefer to get the XMP files first so they can make final tweaks before delivery.
How do I get started with the Imagen API?
Reach out to the Imagen team to request an API key — you can’t generate one independently from the app. Once you have your key, the quickstart guide at github.com/imagen-ai/api-docs walks you through your first project. New trial users also get 1,500 free edits to test the API before committing to a plan.
