Simple Oil Paint Effect
The Simple Oil Paint Effect turns a photo into a painterly image in your browser. It scales your picture to at most 800 pixels on the long edge, then a classic oil paint filter replaces each pixel with the dominant color of its neighborhood, flattening detail into blocks of color. Adjust brush size and smoothness, preview, and download a JPG.

Frequently asked questions
What exactly does the Simple Oil Paint Effect do to my photos?
It applies a classic oil paint filter. For every pixel, the tool looks at the square of pixels around it, sorts them into brightness levels, finds the level that occurs most often, and paints the pixel with the average color of that group. Neighboring pixels end up sharing colors, so fine texture flattens into patches that read like dabs of paint, while strong edges and the overall composition stay recognizable. Brush size and smoothness control how strong the effect is.
How do I apply the Simple Oil Paint Effect to my high-resolution images?
Click the upload area and choose a JPG, PNG or WebP file. To keep processing fast, the tool scales large images down to a maximum of 800 pixels on the longest side. Two sliders appear: Brush Size (Radius), from 1 to 6, and Smoothness (Intensity Levels), from 5 to 50. Click Apply Oil Paint Effect and the result appears in the preview. Adjust and apply again as often as you like, then click Download Result to save a JPG.
When should a photographer choose an oil paint filter over standard color grading?
Choose it when you want an artistic interpretation rather than a photorealistic one. Because the filter flattens fine texture, it can also disguise slight softness or digital noise. Color grading changes the mood of a realistic photo, while this effect changes the medium. Keep in mind that the output is at most 800 pixels on the long edge, so it suits social posts, web galleries, thumbnails and small prints rather than large canvas prints.
Why does the Simple Oil Paint Effect make my portrait subjects look distorted?
Faces lose definition when the brush size is large relative to the face, because the filter merges colors across a wider area and small features like eyes and lips blend into their surroundings. Lower Brush Size (Radius) to 1 or 2 and raise Smoothness so more color levels are kept, then apply again. Since the image is scaled to 800 pixels, a face that fills more of the frame keeps more detail, so crop closer before uploading.
How does this tool compare to complex photo editing software plugins?
Desktop painting plugins offer many controls, such as brush shapes, stroke direction, lighting and paint depth, and need installing and learning. This tool keeps to two settings, brush size and smoothness, and runs instantly in your browser with nothing to install. It does not simulate real brush strokes or canvas texture; it gives a quick painterly look at web size. For gallery prints with full control, a dedicated plugin is the better choice.
Why is image resolution important when using this specific painterly tool?
Every photo is scaled to at most 800 pixels on the longest side before the filter runs, so a 50-megapixel file and a 2-megapixel file end up the same size. What matters is how much of the frame your subject fills: a tight crop gives the subject more of those 800 pixels and keeps more detail. A sharp, clean source still helps, because heavy compression artifacts become patches of color too. The final JPG is at most 800 pixels as well.
What file formats are supported for uploading and downloading?
You can upload JPG, PNG and WebP images, and other formats your browser can open. The result always downloads as a JPG at 95 percent quality, named Oil_Paint_ followed by your file name, which keeps the painted texture clean. Transparent areas are not kept. Camera RAW files cannot be opened in a browser, so export them to JPG or PNG before uploading.
How can I ensure the colors in my photo translate well to the painted style?
Do your basic color correction and contrast adjustments first. The filter groups pixels by brightness, so photos with flat lighting or low contrast tend to turn into large, uniform patches. A little extra contrast, saturation or vibrance before processing often gives a richer result, closer to the dense pigments of real oil paintings. Make sure white balance is accurate and shadows are not crushed, so the filter has distinct tones to work with.
What should I do if the tool is processing very slowly or freezing?
Because images are capped at 800 pixels, processing usually takes a moment. The heaviest setting is Brush Size 6, which examines 169 neighboring pixels for every pixel, and the page may pause briefly while the Processing pixels message shows. On an older phone or tablet, try a smaller brush size, close other tabs, or switch to a computer. If a file never loads at all, it may be in a format your browser cannot open.
Can I use the stylized images for commercial client work?
Yes, as long as you own the rights to the original photograph. The tool applies a mathematical filter to your image; no ownership of the result is claimed, and there are no licensing restrictions from Imagen. Keep the 800-pixel output size in mind: it suits social media graphics, web use, album or blog thumbnails and small prints, but not large wall art or canvas prints.
